AT THE BENCH
The useful part, first.
- Record the exact station, handle and revision.
- Connector shape is not a verified pinout.
- Keep vendor claims and independently checked records separate.
Compatibility has several layers
A replacement may slide into a handle but still be the wrong electrical or thermal system. Mechanical fit covers diameter, length, retention and contact position. Electrical compatibility covers the heater, sensor, earth connection and connector wiring. Control compatibility covers how the station drives the heater and interprets the sensor. Successful fit establishes only the first layer.
This is particularly important with inexpensive replacement handles and broadly reused naming conventions. A seller’s photograph of a familiar connector does not prove that its pins carry the same signals. Weller, YIHUA and WEP should be recorded by complete model and revision, rather than treated as three interchangeable families.
What an existing matrix can establish
atomic14’s tip and cartridge matrix is useful for navigating systems such as T12, C245, C210, 900M and Weller ET. Its own description says that the data is community and vendor sourced. That makes it a good starting index, not evidence that the author electrically tested every combination. The Weller WE1010 entry is likewise a model reference to check against the exact manufacturer documentation.
Our research did not find a fully verified, independent WEP and YIHUA handle pinout database. That is a gap in the material examined, not proof that no such database exists. Until a specific combination is documented, the honest status is unknown. Do not turn an untested forum recommendation into a confirmed match.
Make a record worth keeping
Photograph labels on the station, handle and tip packaging. Note the purchased source, date, connector orientation and hardware revision. Locate the manufacturer’s part number or drawing where available. With everything disconnected from mains and the handle unplugged, a competent technician can document continuity and resistance observations using a low-energy meter. Such readings support a wiring record but do not by themselves prove safe powered operation.
Never identify pins by briefly applying power to an unknown handle. Sensor connections can be damaged, an earth conductor can be misassigned, and an apparent match can hide a different heater. If the documentation and unpowered checks disagree, stop the compatibility claim. Any powered validation should use a documented compatible system and a defined procedure carried out by someone equipped to assess it.
- Mechanical fit: dimensions, retention and contact position.
- Electrical evidence: manufacturer pinout or documented unpowered checks.
- Control evidence: sensor and heater system supported by the station.
- Test scope: exact tested parts, with unknown revisions left unknown.
Fit does not guarantee performance
A compatible replacement can still differ in plating, geometry, contact quality and thermal response. Voltlog’s genuine-versus-replacement Hakko T12 comparison provides a useful research question and identifies an authorised-reseller reference sample. Its measurements are primarily in video, so the companion text cannot serve as a complete numerical comparison here.
For a shop maintaining several benches, fewer well-documented systems can be easier to stock than a collection of superficially similar handles. Keep compatibility records beside thermal tests and consumable availability. The right spare is one that fits the exact system, performs the required joint and can be reliably bought again.

Sources & limitations
Research was gathered on 21 September 2026. These links were not freshly reverified for this edition. A test result is specific to its sample, setup and stated conditions.
- atomic14: tip and cartridge compatibility matrix
Community/vendor-sourced index, not a universal independent electrical test database.
- atomic14: Weller WE1010 entry
Model-specific starting reference; check original manufacturer documentation and hardware revision.
